Mandatory Gun Ownership Cuts Crime

In cities with restrictive gun laws only the criminals possess firearms. Logically if a thief knew you owned a gun and could legally defend your home against invaders they would leave you and your family alone. The Georgia town of Kennesaw has proven this obvious point. Every head of household in Kennesaw is legally required to own a gun and ammunition. Since the 1982 passage of the mandatory ownership law Kennesaw has experienced a population boom and yet has virtually no crime!

Do you know that if you live in the small town of Kennesaw, Georgia, you are required to have and maintain a firearm?

On May 1, 1982, a new ordinance was passed by the city council of Kennesaw. This law ( Sec. 34-1 Heads of households to maintain firearms) made it mandatory for each household to own and maintain a gun, as well as ammunition. Not only was the ordinance passed by city council, it was a unanimous decision. The ordinance states the gun law is needed “In order to provide for the emergency management of the City, and further in order to provide for and protect the safety, security and general welfare of the city and its inhabitants, every head of household residing in the City limits is required to maintain a firearm, together with ammunition therefore.” Of course, exclusions were made to convicted felons, people with religious objections, and people with disabilities.

Members of the city council introduced and voted for the ordinance to make a statement when a city in Illinois, Morton Grove, passed an ordinance banning hand guns from anyone other than peace officers. Morton Grove was the first community to ever ban the sale and possession of handguns.

Both city ordinances drew worldwide media attention, with Kennesaw’s attention being negative. Nicknamed “Gun Town USA” from a column titled the same and written by Art Buchwald, expectations were for the town to covert back to the Old West style of handling disagreements with ruthless shoot outs. This expectation never happened. In fact, more than 25 years after the ban, not a single resident of Kennesaw has been involved in a fatal shooting – as a victim, attacker or defender. There has been one firearm related murder but not from a resident of Kennesaw. Since the ordinance, no child has ever been injured with a firearm in Kennesaw. Crime dropped after the ordinance and the city has maintained an exceptionally low crime rate ever since, even with the population swelling from 5,000 in 1982 to approximately 30,000 today. The truth is crime has plummeted and population has soared.

In comparison, the population of Morton Grove, Illinois has dropped slightly and the crime rate has increased, especially right after the ban.

Putting a ban on owning a firearm may keep guns out of the hands of law abiding citizens but will it put them at a disadvantage when it comes to protecting their families and possessions? Criminals who do not abide by laws anyway, will still possess handguns. If you were a criminal planning on breaking into a home to steal or cause somebody harm, would you choose a home in a city where every homeowner is required to carry a gun and ammunition or a home in a city where homeowners are banned from carrying guns?

As America continues the slide into insolvency many city and county governments are forced to slash the number of police on the streets. A growing number of cities have eliminated their police departments all together contracting out the service to private police forces. Unfortunately private police tend to focus on a cities more affluent residents leaving working class Americans unprotected.

The bad guys know that police department are reducing services and putting fewer cops on the street. In many towns where services have been cut the crime rate has gone through the roof. Colorado Springs, for instance, was forced by budget issues to cut their police department. Since then violent crimes against citizens have skyrocketed.

At least nine robberies since the beginning of June in southeast Colorado Springs could be the work of a pack of thieves violently attacking lone pedestrians at night and people getting out of cars, police said.

Police spokesman Sgt. Steve Noblitt could not confirm that any of the robberies are related, but said police have noticed a disturbing trend.

“We definitely think we have a situation where we have people committing multiple robberies,” he said Wednesday.

Handguns were used in seven of the robberies and shots were fired in three, according to police reports online. One of the victims was wounded and another told police he “felt the shock wave from the bullet as it passed by.”

The armed criminals know the people cannot defend themselves and chances of being captured by a gutted police department are next to nothing. Not only does crime increase in these communities but criminals actually flock to the city seeing opportunity.

Additionally with our national guard and military tied up in several endless wars the country is virtually defenseless. We are witnessing this in our south western states where drug violence is spilling over the border as waring cartels seek new territory.  American citizens are at the mercy of these vicious thugs. If the drug warlords knew that every American was heavily armed and ready to defend this country the number of drug related crimes and border crossings would disappear.

Most states allow for direct amending of their constitution by the citizens. Look into the process and start working towards a state ballot initiative that would require every home to have a gun and ammunition. If that seems a little overwhelming talk to your city council members and pass mandatory ownership locally just like Kennesaw, Georgia.
