A virulent outbreak of a viral hemorrhagic fever has overwhelmed your cities hospitals and emergency services. Driving home you notice several heavily armed soldiers waving off customers and guarding the pumps at your local 7-11. Time to bug out to your well stocked survival retreat 90 miles from town before they lock down the city. You gather the family, secure the house, throw your 72 hour kits into the bed of the truck and start your well planned trip down the back roads to your retreat.
Just then you notice the gas gauge hovering near empty, you forgot to fill up after your weekend fishing trip. With the gas stations secured by the military and sheltering in place not an option what would you do to protect your family and get to your survival retreat?

You can either steal gas or steal a car. Both options have a big downside especially if you are caught.
Personally I would lean towards stealing gas less legal impact down the road. If you are caught you could be shot or jailed in the diseased holding cell. It takes time to siphon gas out of a tank and get it into your tank.
Stealing a car is quicker especially if you have a gun. But the legal issues are much more dire if the legal system survives the outbreak.
The best solution would have been keeping enough gas in storage to make it to your retreat. Figure out how many gallons you will need then store it in your garage or a storage unit.

Well, since nanny.gov says I shouldn’t be driving my Toyota Tundra anyway, it is already full of gas and sitting idle in my drive. When TSHTF I will risk my accelerator pedal being stuck and just go for it.
Well…the lawnmower, the leafblower, the weedwhacker, the spare generator, the yuppie neighbor’s kid who has that go-kart, as long as I find enough to get me to the outskirts of town where I can spend more time drumming up gas or buying a tank off that farmer with 4 cars on blocks in his driveway.
Following along with Ansidian’s non-stealing ideas… how about asking around your neighborhood? Surely not -everyone- is leaving, right? Surely you’ve taken steps to get to know your neighbors, and develop a network, yes? Perhaps one of your neighbors with two cars would be willing to part with some gas, or several neighbors willing to part with some gas for a total full tank for you.
In a pinch, you could even bring one of your neighbors along… add more water to the stew at your retreat; the gas ( and your family getting out ) is the neighbor’s price of admission to your retreat. The price you might pay for being negligent with gas prepping. Make sure your neighbors don’t seem like they’re positive for the Hemorrhagic Cooties.
When it comes down to it, assuming you don’t have another vehicle, you still need to get out. Bikes? If you all have go-bags, then with luck you have bikes. Bikes are rougher than driving, but easier than being in place when the town gets closed down. No bikes? Guess you’re walking.
It seems to me the emphasis would be on getting your family out and to safety; getting gas is an option, but you might not want to lock yourself into that. Time to think radially, and maybe live.

This is exactly why I keep 3x 5 gallon cans of gas full at all times in my garage. I have pre-calculated that this is enough gas to get both my wife and I’s cars to her parents who live in the middle of nowhere.
Since the bags fit nicely into the Radio Flier Wagon we bought for this purpose. I would strap the bags in with the bungee cords and attach the strap to the bracket on the back of the bicycle. Now i can travel in places cars cannot and I have my gear. I will make slower progress but i will be out of town in plenty of time to miss the lock down. The roads will be watched a lot more than the bike trails and travel should be uneventful.
you are a;ready on the road. start looking at houses. Find an area with three or four together, offer to pay,trade or work it off. If you have not planned a walking way to your retreat ahead of time; in the pot you go!
