The Congress Blog » General Motors to Invest $1 Billion in Brazil Operations — Money to Come from U.S. Rescue Program
General Motors plans to invest $1 billion in Brazil to avoid the kind of problems the U.S. automaker is facing in its home market, said the beleaguered car maker.

According to the president of GM Brazil-Mercosur, Jaime Ardila, the funding will come from the package of financial aid that the manufacturer will receive from the U.S. government and will be used to “complete the renovation of the line of products up to 2012.”

“It wouldn’t be logical to withdraw the investment from where we’re growing, and our goal is to protect investments in emerging markets,” he said in a statement published by the business daily Gazeta Mercantil.

Bug-Out Van

My late father-in-law enjoyed what we would call his “bug out van” for many years. It was a 1976 Dodge with windows all around and he had fitted a platform bed against the back doors and a tidy kitchenette that included a built- in two burner cook top and an ice-box (for ice! not propane). He fashioned cupboards to fit overhead as well. All of the windows had Velcro tabs strategically placed to allow the nighttime installation of privacy curtains. It was quite the deal, actually. He had even crafted a tiny fold-down tabletop at my mother-in-law’s request so that they could sit down for their meals at a properly set table!

Staying Alive: OOPS!
People in a vast seismic zone in the southern and midwestern United States would face catastrophic damage if a major earthquake struck there and should ensure that builders keep that risk in mind, a government report said on Thursday. The Federal Emergency Management Agency said if earthquakes strike in what geologists define as the New Madrid Seismic Zone (NMSZ), they would cause “the highest economic losses due to a natural disaster in the United States.
“FEMA predicted a large earthquake would cause “widespread and catastrophic physical damage” across Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri and Tennessee — home to some 44 million people.
