SurvivalBlog.com: Retreat Locale and Firearms Selection Questions from a Newbie Easterner

SurvivalBlog.com
I am a new reader of SurvivalBlog but I am already hooked. I realize that I am woefully unprepared to defend and care for my family if and when TSHTF. I live in New Jersey and commute to New York City every day, and work in finance. After 9/11, when I lost several dear friends, I took some steps to prepare for a short (several days to a week) disruption or an attack. I purchased a generator, several hundred MREs, bottled water, and iodine pills. I even applied for a firearm purchase permit but never bought a weapon.

Working in the capital markets, I have see firsthand over the last few month show how close we have come to a complete breakdown in the monetary and payments system. As a person who is generally a free market advocate and non-interventionist it troubles me deeply that the government has had to step in to try and salvage the banking system. However, I can say that in the days before some of these programs were announced, we were probably much closer than people think to a severe systemic financial collapse. I saw firsthand the panic and fear that prevailed on Wall Street in those few days, and it was real.

Being independent means doing things for yourself, seeing a need and instead of waiting for someone else to take care of it, the independent person would get creative and find a way to fill that need. I would like to introduce you to a wonderful lady and independent soul. Her name is Diane, I found her blog a couple of days ago and was thrilled at what I found. Diane started a co-op, you basically check her blog to see what she has to offer (she has really good stuff!), the prices and such, email your order to her, she sends you an invoice, you pay, she ships. I contacted Diane and this is the conversation we had.

Total Survivalist Libertarian Rantfest: The M1 Garand
I got tons of awesome advice to the post on M1 Garand vs. FN-FAL. I am very honored to get a comment from Jim Rawles thought I did not end up going that way. I ended up buying the M1 Garand for a variety of reasons. First and foremost I just plain do not like the FN-FAL though I am not saying it is a bad weapon or anything like that. I put them in the same category as XD pistols, great product in every way except that I just don’t like it.

Everyday Prepper: 32 Pounds of Rice later

Friday I received six 5 gallon bucket lids, six mylar bucket liners, and a bucket opener tool. When everything arrived it went to my old address instead of my new address and I had to go ask the guy if he got a package for me. He was helpful and ran and got it but told me he had opened it by mistake. He assured me everything was there and so I left for home. I didn’t even bother with asking him how it was he made the mistake of opening a large box that he didn’t order from a company he had probably never heard of.

I got home and realized that while everything was there he had ripped one of the bucket lid tear strips off. I was mad at the guy for messing with my stuff but then I realized I wanted the tear strips of anyway so I just cooled off and set the stuff aside until I could get to it.

TheSurvivalistBlog.com: Obama, Gun Control and the Cache

Obama, Gun Control and the Cache
Obama’s “gun policy” can be found on his web site which states; “As president, Barack Obama would repeal the Tiahrt Amendment, which restricts the ability of local law enforcement to access important gun trace information, and give police officers across the nation the tools they need to solve gun crimes and fight the illegal arms trade. Obama and Biden also favor commonsense measures that respect the Second Amendment rights of gun owners, while keeping guns away from children and from criminals who shouldn’t have them. They support closing the gun show loophole and making guns in this country childproof. They also support making the expired federal Assault Weapons Ban permanent; as such weapons belong on foreign battlefields and not on our streets.”
