Barack Obama, a 47-year-old first-term senator from Illinois, shattered more than 200 years of history Tuesday night by winning election as the first African-American president of the United States.

A crowd of 125,000 people jammed Grant Park in Chicago, where Obama addressed the nation for the first time as its president-elect at midnight ET. Hundreds of thousands more — Mayor Richard Daley said he would not be surprised if a million Chicagoans jammed the streets — watched on a large television screen outside the park.

“If there is anyone out there who doubts that America is a place where anything is possible, who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time, who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer,” Obama declared.

My polling place is about forty miles south of my place. I got there at just after four. There were three poll workers manning the tables and that was it. No other voters. We use paper ballots and soft lead pencils. It was a long, two-sided ballot and took me a while. When I finished I was still the only voter in the place.

London To Encourage Backyard Gardening Among Residents | AHN | November 4, 2008
With the United Kingdom expected to be the hardest hit among mature European economies with the global financial meltdown, London officials are searching for ways to help ease the financial pressures on residents.

One measure proposed Monday by London Mayor Boris Johnson is to encourage backyard gardening among residents, even on top of flat roofs. The first phase of Capital Growth project, which will be overseen by London Food head Rosie Boycott, is for city residents to grow food on 2,012 patches of land by 2012.

Councils, schools, hospitals, housing estates and utility companies will be encouraged to pinpoint idle lands which could be converted into vegetable gardens by green-thumbed Londoners.

Boycott said the veggie gardens do not need to be only on flat lands, it could be small plots of soil on canal banks, reservoir banks and unused railway yards.

Consumer bankruptcies soar in October | U.S. | Reuters
Personal bankruptcy filings soared 40 percent in October and are expected to keep climbing as home values sink and individual debts balloon, the American Bankruptcy Institute (ABI) said on Tuesday.

U.S. consumers filed some 106,266 bankruptcies in October, up 40 percent from a year ago and up 20 percent from September.
